Malay Speaking Countries

Malay-Speaking World

Malay is the official language of Malaysia and is also widely spoken in Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines, although there are regional differences in the language. English is still widely used in professional spheres within these countries, although there are approximately 75 million native speakers of Malay.

Standard Malay, or the form of Malay used as a literary standard, is sometimes called Malacca, Johor, and Riau Malay. This mixed language is closely related to many other regional languages; so much so that it is difficult sometimes to determine whether a regional language is a, in fact, a separate language or merely a dialect. Historically, Malay has been influenced by Sanskrit and Islamic literature, which gave the language an influx of loanwords from Arabic, Tamil and Sanskrit. Malay is an Austronesian language.

About Malay language

Malay first appears in written history around 1520 and was used then as a vehicle for many ethnic groups to be able to communicate with one another. Malay is written with a Latin script known as Rumi, although there are some variations to this throughout its geographic use. Rumi is considered the official writing style in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Another form of writing Malay is called Jawi, and although it is not as widely official as Rumi, there are many efforts being taken to preserve and teach Jawi. This is particularly true in more rural areas of Malaysia.

Offering Malay-language materials to your potential customers means opening the door for a market of nearly 250 million speakers.
